[Geary Street, from Taylor, view East, S. F.] On the near right corner of Geary and Mason is the only known view of one of the earliest buildings to be constructed in this area. It was built as a Presbyterian Church in 1854 and went through a number of uses as a church, Sunday School, and a non-sectarian school (the Urban Academy on the likely date of this photograph)(PF), 8th Ward Market at 443 Geary. View North at the west side of the 400 block of Montgomery Street toward Telegraph Hill. The four buildings shown on this block were all built by 1855. The four story building at left (three bays in width, with iron balconies) was LeCount and Strong's building, built in 1853, and famous then for having a front made of granite. The three story building at the SW corner of Montgomery and Sacramento was Thayer's Building, built in 1854 or 1855. The photographer R. H. Vance had his studio there in the 1850s. Across Sacramento Street is John Parrott's building (three stories), built in 1862. (WMK) Northbound horsecar is visible.
