X-Shaped Mary's Help Hospital in the foreground. Central Freeway (under construction) stub at South Van Ness at center. 150 Otis, built 1916 as Juvenile Detention Home, and in 1957 Department of Social Services offices, to left of smoke plume (SF Landmark # 248). Former Valencia Theatre, converted to a church in 1929, right of center. (Fire was the same day as a major earthquake, though determined to be unrelated)

View north from the balcony of the U.S. Marine Hospital (Harrison between Main and Spear), toward the Selby Shot Tower at First and Howard. In the foreground is the west side of the 300 block of Main Street, between Folsom and Harrison. The hills in the distance are Nob Hill (at left) and Telegraph Hill (at right). The brick building at 320 Main Street, with an arched vehicle entrance at left, a pedimented human entrance at right, and quoins at the corners, is SFFD Hose No. 2, later known as Steamer No. 9. It was built in 1868. (WMK) Original title, "Moonlight Effect, from Rincon Point" No. 513.
