The wreck of the 'Aquila' in San Francisco [engraving] The Aquila sank on the night of Nov. 15, 1863 while moored at Hathaway's Wharf during a bad storm. USS Camanche was a Passaic-class monitor built on the east coast and shipped in pieces to SF Bay where it was reassembled and launched November 14, 1864 at China Basin. She was fitted out and completed after the end of the Civil War. (Watkins No. 690 'Building the Comanche, San Francisco').
