Calvary Presbyterian Church and Victorian buildings on site of St. Francis Hotel (built 1904) The house slightly right of center, with the columned middle bay, was 317 Powell Street, built in 1864 as the duplex homes of brothers-in-law David Stern and Levi Strauss. They were partners in the clothing manufacturers Levi Strauss and Co. By the 1880s it became the Cosmos Club. The bay-windowed house at left, #309, was built in 1874. (WMK)
