Originally constructed as the Fine Arts Building for 1894 Midwinter Fair, it was renamed Memorial Museum in 1895 and eventually became part of de Young Museum. Building at left was originally the Royal Bavarian Pavilion at the 1894 Fair. It was converted into an annex to the Memorial Museum. Turtle sundial (by M. Earl Cummings) installed October 1907. Streetcar at left lost its brakes at Turk and Baker, traveled downhill and struck the rear of the center car in the photo at Scott St. The cars traveled an additional block before stopping. Nine were injured. At upper left Garrick Theatre (Previously Orpheum Theater & later Bagdad Bowling Alley (before move to 26th and Noriega) and Princess (later Ellis) Theatre, on Ellis near Fillmore. Service station at Steiner corner at right. All or nearly all buildings in view moved or demolished as part of Fillmore redevelopment. (AS)
