1906 Earthquake and Fire, Refugee camp after the 1906 earthquake and fire. Camp #5, in the Recreation grounds (Big Rec). The original idea was to construct long barracks to house families, with open ceilings above 8 ft. walls. Squabbles led to fights between residents. The idea was abandoned and families moved into the conical Sibley tents on the camp margin. The wooden buildings were used for storage of supplies.
