Shaffer sued San Francisco Gas & Electric, United Railroads and Pacific State Telephone and Telegraph on December 22, 1904, claiming that the companies maintained uninsulated guy wires on a pole at 24th and San Bruno, which shocked him and caused him to fall to the street.
