Downtown / Union SquareNW corner showing new Hotel Californian. The building was completed in 1924 by architect Edward E. Young for owner Matthew A. Little for around $2 million and opened as the Hotel Californian. Four additional stories were added in 1929 by architect Alfred Henry Jacobs. It was purchased in 1935 by the Glide Foundation for over $1 million as an investment property to support Glide Church. Next door on Taylor is the first Bohemian Garage, built on the pre-fire site of the old Club Stables, the longest continuously operating stable in the Tenderloin. Next to the Bohemian Garage is the Hotel Bellevue on Geary and Taylor. (PF) West on O'Farrell are Hotel Eureka, Fifth Church of Christ Scientist (completed 1923,with scaffolding) and Hotel Sequoia.
