View northwest to Pierce between Green and Union, with Presidio, Fort Point, Marin Headlands, tidal slough and Golden Gate in Background, from Fillmore Street. Large corner mansion with gardens front and back was built circa 1884 by wealthy attorney and landowner David Bixler. Four story windmill and water tank on Union. Chapel at left was built in 1887 with funds provided by Stephen S. Smith, deacon of the Plymouth Congregational Church and publisher of the Pacific. In 1895, it became the Pierce Street Congregational Church. Front fence of landmark Casebolt mansion at lower left. Same image as wnp37.00223, different cropping. This was standard procedure at the time, the horse was used to pull the car around the corner until it could grip the cable 5th Avenue. This is the last Geary Street cable car before electrification.
