Spring Valley Flume

[DPW 1567] View north toward Bernal Heights, The aqueduct is a 44" pipe built by the Spring Valley Water Co. in the late 1800's. It carries water from the Crystal Springs Reservoir in San Mateo County to San Francisco via the University Mound reservoir. The trestle was built by the Ocean Shore Railway Co. in 1906, and was filled in 1914-15. Alemany Blvd. now runs along the alignment of the trestle

Cropped version of photo published in San Francisco Examiner April 8, 1943 edition with caption: "BARGAIN OFFERED TAXPAYERS: NOT JUNK---These old Market Street Railway trolleys go with the land on which they stand at Funston Ave. and Lincoln Way, if the city trolley merger goes through. City expects to salvage many usable parts from these cars to put new cars together." The 1943 effort failed, but one in May, 1944 was successful and Muni and Market St. Railway merged on September 29, 1944. Visible in front are MSRy cars #795, #896, #839, #894, #787 and #848, scrapped in 1946.
