Golden Gate Park Stadium was proposed in 1904, delayed construction because of the 1906 earthquake and fire. Opened on July 4, 1906. It was envisioned as a multi-use stadium, but popularly called the Polo Field because that sport was played intermittently from the 1920s to 1960s.(JF)

Golden Gate Park[Monarch the Bear, Golden Gate Park. H. S. Hoyt.] Monarch was the model for the bear on the California state flag. The bear pit was situated near the west end of the today's AIDS Memorial Grove.
