View from Mark Hopkins
Elevated view looking steeply down from Mark Hopkins Hotel to Mason Street, with Flood Mansion (Pacific Union Club) at left and Fairmont Hotel at right. Intersection of Mason and Sacramento Streets at top with Park Lane Apartments and Brocklebank Apartments at northern corners. At upper left, the brown house on the corner of Sacramento St. and Sproule Lane is the Sproule Mansion (1907-1967), built for George Whittell and sold in 1917 to William Sproule (1858-1935), president of Wells Fargo Express, the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Pacific-Union Club. It was then extensively remodeled by Bliss & Saville architects. It was demolished in November, 1967 after an unsuccessful fight for its preservation.
