View southwest from Union Square to Elkan Gunst Building (with Air France signage and billboard on roof) with Milton F. Kries restaurant and cosmetics, Techau Tavern. Manx Hotel, Crane Hotel. The Elkan Gunst Building was completed in 1907 by cigar dealer, champagne wholesaler, and former police commissioner Moses A. Gunst, and named after his son. The Hotel Crane was built in 1909 as the Goodfriend Hotel. The Manx Hotel was built by George D. Toy, completed and opened Oct. 1, 1908. Toy grew up in a house on this lot after Daniel Toy, their father, moved the family there in the early 1850s when the area was still known as St. Ann's Valley.(PF) At far right 333 Geary Building (former St. Francis Theater, later Lefty O'Doul's) with Gene Compton's Restaurant.
