June 12, 1900

Elevated view north to James Lick (Pioneer) Monument (then located at what is presently Hyde & Grove Sts. in front of old City Hall). In 1993, the monument was moved to the pedestrian mall on Fulton Street between the Asian Art Museum and the new Main Library. The French-made cannon in front of of the monument was a Spanish-American war prize, presented by the Army in a ceremony on March 21, 1900. It is now in the Presidio. "New City Hall Square" sign on monument. Name changed to Marshall Square in December, 1902. (DHW 3-12-99)
