January 1, 1899

Ocean Beach Pavilion viewed from Great Highway. Seal Rock Hotel at far left. Numerous horse drawn carriages and crowds of people on highway. Built in 1884, it contained a giant ballroom that could hold 2,000 people at a time. The building had bars, restaurants, and a boxing gym that was once used by the first African-American heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson. After many conversions and remodelings, the Pavilion was demolished in 1972.
