Filbert near Van Ness
Construction project at the Continental Lodge at Van Ness and Filbert discovered an old well dated 1859. Motel manager Bernard Burke points to the 1859 plaque while workers excavate the well. the well was on the former property of E. Willard Burr, who shipped a knocked-down house around the Horn and assembled it in 1852 on a Laguna Survey lot cut through by today's Filbert Street and Van Ness Avenue, which did not officially exist west of Larkin St. at the time. Burr's house was the last structure blown up by the Army as a firebreak in 1906. The present successor to the Continental Lodge is the da Vinci Villa hotel. (BB)
