Helmet Rock, Lands End

July 1, 1909

Sunset behind Helmet Rock. "W.E. Balcom Supervisor" advertising on rock. Balcom had been appointed to the Board of Supervisors in June 1909 ran for reelection in but did not survive the August primary. Why advertise on this remote rock? The Cliff line streetcar running around Lands End had good view of it.

Paul Rosenberg: Who else but Wells Estee Balcom! Loring P Rixford resigned June 7, 1909, Wells Estee Balcom appointed to succeed Rixford. Not a candidate for retention in November, 1909, by Mayor Edward Robeson Taylor. That year, however, had the only partisan primary in SF electoral history. I've never seen the results of that primary so my guess is that WE was a candidate in the Republican primary but had no traction and was not on the November slate. Wells Estee Balcom finished 27th in the Republican Primary with the top 18 surviving to the November election. I guess one month of incumbency is no help at the polls.
