View north toward Sacramento Street. The brown house on the corner of Sacramento St. and Sproule Lane is the Sproule Mansion (1907-1967), built for George Whittell and sold in 1917 to William Sproule (1858-1935), president of Wells Fargo Express and the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Pacific-Union Club across the street. It was then extensively remodeled by Bliss & Saville architects. It was demolished in November, 1967 after an unsuccessful fight for its preservation.
