Chestnut near Mason

January 1, 1935

Bocce Courts and men playing on the current site of Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center (TEL Hi) Gymnasium. View north toward Chestnut between Powell and Mason. Flats at 566-568 and 572-578 Chestnut still stand 2021. Bauer-Schweitzer Hop and Malt factory at right was originally reconstructed in 1908 on the site of its prior operation dating to 1880, which had been destroyed in 1906. The portion on Chestnut and some other portions of the factory were demolished and converted to housing in the early 2000's. The taller portion in the far background which fronts on Francisco, was designated San Francisco Landmark #129 and converted to housing as part of the same project, retaining some of its original features.
