View west over North Beach towards the Golden Gate and Fort Point. Sand dunes of White Point at center right, with Black Point (later Fort Mason) beyond. Large white house atop ridge at left is Humphrey's Castle, built 1852, demolished 1949. Gold Rush brig Euphemia, used by the city at various times and locations as both a prison and an insane asylum, moored along shore at center.
