Fillmore Chutes
High Diver John A. Mangels, professionally known as John Powers, doing a high dive act at the Fillmore Chutes. After 8 years of performing his act, Mangels was injured on October 3, 1909, the last day of the season. He suffered a broken spine when strong winds blew him into the side of the small dive tank. The 24 year-old Mangels died from the injury at St. Mary's Hospital on October 5, 1909. [JA Mangles (sic) at Chutes SF Sept 1909][A. Lipman SF]
