Dump car doing rail maintenance
from: Jo Anne Quinn email: lapichon3@gmail.com message: My Grandparents, John and Delia (Meehan) Quinn owned and ran a grocery store at this location - 1401 Castro. They and their five children resided over the store - gaining entry to the upstairs through the 395 Jersey St address. (The building was constructed in 1900, and the 1900 Census shows the family living at 353 Jersey St. The 1910 Census shows them operating the store and living on the second floor.) John Quinn passed away in 1917. It is not known if Delia continued the grocery store operation or leased it out. but his widow and children remained in the upstairs home until 1922, after which they moved to the Richmond District. I noted with interest that this 1941 photo shows the lower floor still being used as a grocery store. I visited the building in 2010, and the current business tenants (a beauty salon) were kind enough to give me a tour of the lower floor. The walls and windows were still in their original state!
