Emiliano Echeverria Feb 15, 2022: moving to storage at Pier 25 for what turned out to be a dead end. In 1952, the Railroad and Locomotive organization paid Muni to preserve cars #578 (Then still a sand car) and car #1. The cars were removed from Muni property, pending the construction of the California State Railroad Museum that was originally slated for the Haslett Warehouse located on Hyde, which ended up in Sacramento. In 1955, car #578 was restored to its 1896 appearance. (This car has only been superficially restored: the car is 90% original materials!). In 1959, both cars were removed on this train to Pier 25 for storage. In 1962, the Port notified Muni that the Pier was to be demolished for the new Pier 27, So Muni had the cars returned to Geneva. Muni then sent car #1 over to Elkton for its 1962 restoration just in time for Muni's Golden Week.
