Howard Near 3rd
January 1, 1875
The building at left is Union Hall, on Howard between 3rd and 4th streets, built in 1863. California was filling up with easterners from northern states who fled west to escape the Civil War draft. Instead of fighting, they named a prominent building after the Union. In the 1880's Union Hall became Morosco's Amphitheatre. The building was destroyed by fire on May 2, 1898. Muybridge nos. 205 & 621, 'Union Market and Union Hall Howard St.' (WMK) S.C. Bugbee, architect. Union Market; dancing academy; horses with wagons
