Elevated view southeast over new Pacific Telephone Co. main office construction site at 430-444 Bush Street to buildings on south side of Bush Street. St. George Garage (Wm. Saunders, prop.) with Goodrich Tires advertisement on east side. The no longer existing St. Anne Street runs through the site and was removed for this project. Hobart Building in distance left. Buildings on the south side of Bush Street still stand 2021. 8 story building at left is the Charleston Building (Albert Pissis architect, 1908), white building to its right is the San Francisco Press Club Building (Henry Hedger architect, 1908), at far right Pacific States Telephone Building (A.A. Calvary Presbyterian Church and Victorian buildings on site of St. Francis Hotel (built 1904) The house slightly right of center, with the columned middle bay, was 317 Powell Street, built in 1864 as the duplex homes of brothers-in-law David Stern and Levi Strauss. They were partners in the clothing manufacturers Levi Strauss and Co. By the 1880s it became the Cosmos Club. The bay-windowed house at left, #309, was built in 1874. (WMK)
