19th & Valencia

View north on Valencia toward 19th Street. J-Church Streetcar was diverted to Valencia for a few months in 1946 due to extensive sewer repair on 18th Street (which closed the normal J-Church route). During this time, the J-Church ran on the inside tracks on Market, which enabled it to turn onto Valencia. It ran on Valencia to Mission to 29th to Sanchez, essentially duplicating the by-then extinct 9-line. In this way Muni was able to serve the outer end of the J-Church route. Buildings in this view of the east side of the street are largely intact. (2019)

Night view of Federal Building with Herman Volz murals on front for Golden Gate International Exposition. The mural, titled 'The Conquest of the West', was, at that time, the largest mural in the world. After the Fair the Navy destroyed it when they took possession of Treasure Island. Herman Volz still has two other murals, mosaic ones he did at City College after the Fair.
