January 1, 1890
Layman's Castle on Telegraph Hill, also called the German Castle and Layman's Folly. Photos shows the building after it was enlarged in 1883. The tallest spire was a smokestack for a power plant in the basement that powered a short-lived funicular rail line running up the hill on Greenwich St. [Pioneer Park Observatory, Telegraph Hill.
