View east to Telegraph Hill, Coit Tower, Hyde Street Pier. Stern-wheel riverboat 'Fort Sutter' tied up at Hyde Street Pier at left. (Entrepreneur Barney Gould hoped to turn the riverboat into a floating night club. It was destroyed by fire in 1959.)

View north to early Cow Hollow homes; Presidio beach and tidal slough. Harbor View at center. Fort Point and Marin Headlands. Large corner mansion with tower and gardens front and back was at southwest corner of Pierce and Union and built circa 1884 by wealthy attorney and landowner David Bixler. Four story windmill and water tank on Union above Pierce. House at center with Mansard roof was home of Louis Schultz at 2426 Filbert. Probably taken from near Broadway and Fillmore. Darker version with different cropping and less detail at wnp71.1455.

Buildings around Union Square at left, including Whittell Building, Butler Building, St. Francis Hotel with annex construction in progress, Flood Building. Ruins of A. N. Towne mansion on California Street at far left center. The building's portico was moved to Lloyd Lake in Golden Gate Park in 1909 and became known as Portals of the Past.
