View northwest across Powell to First Methodist Episcopal Church aka Powell Street M.E. Church, built in 1870-1871; the architects were Wright and Sanders. The school at right, at 1119 Powell, was founded here in 1851 and rebuilt in 1854 as a private school. The city rented it as a public school beginning in June 1855 and purchased it in 1859.
