[Dredger No. 3 picking up Coal where the Howard St. Coal Bunkers fell] Men on pier watch dredging operations after Pier 8 (formerly Howard St. Pier No. 2) collapsed on April 21, 1902, taking with it a 28 foot high coal bunker (owned by J.D. Spreckels Co.) loaded with 1600 tons of coal from the W.G. Stafford Co. The collapse was blamed on infestation by teredos, a wormlike marine mollusk. (GGNRA/Behrman GOGA 35346)
