USS Olympia, cruiser
January 1, 1893
Protected Cruiser USS Olympia (C-6). Probably Hunters Point. Stern view of U.S. Navy cruiser 'Olympia' in dry dock. Civilian and two sailors standing on deck. Olympia served as Admiral Dewey's Flagship in the battle of Manila Bay, May 1, 1898 in the Spanish American War. Built at Union Iron Works in Potrero Hill in 1892 and now at the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia. The photo was taken just before or after sea trials, probably after, in 1893-1894 based on the pre-1900 sternplate, lack of turrets, and missing signal platforms. [In dry dock No. 128] [F810 SH-128B]
