NW corner showing new Hotel Californian. The building was completed in 1924 by architect Edward E. Young for owner Matthew A. Little for around $2 million and opened as the Hotel Californian. Four additional stories were added in 1929 by architect Alfred Henry Jacobs. It was purchased in 1935 by the Glide Foundation for over $1 million as an investment property to support Glide Church. Next door on Taylor is the first Bohemian Garage, built on the pre-fire site of the old Club Stables, the longest continuously operating stable in the Tenderloin. Next to the Bohemian Garage is the Hotel Bellevue on Geary and Taylor. (PF)
