View northeast across City Hall Square (name changed to Marshall Square in December, 1902) to Pioneer (James Lick) Monument, City Hall on left, Hall of Records on right. In 1993, the monument was moved to the pedestrian mall on Fulton Street between the Asian Art Museum and the new Main Library. French-made cannon in front of monument was a Spanish-American war prize, presented by the Army in a ceremony on March 21, 1900. It is now in the Presidio.

Sweeney (Sweeney's name was misspelled on the observatory.)
