Part of Panorama, View northeast over Cow Hollow from about Broadway and Pierce. Gas House Cove, Fort Mason, Alcatraz, Angel Island in background. At center left, The Church of St. Mary the Virgin (Episcopal, built 1891, extant 2020) at southwest corner of Union and Steiner, with trees of Frank M. Pixley estate opposite. Pixley owned the entire forested block and his house was within. He also owned much nearby land and gave the land to St. Mary the Virgin on which they built their church. Pixley, 1825-1895, was a journalist, attorney, and politician.

View northwest toward Cow Hollow. Intersection of Pierce and Broadway at bottom. House at 2502 Broadway still standing. Henry Casebolt House (SF Landmark, built 1865) behind white fence past Vallejo St. on Pierce. Small church beyond Casebolt House was built in 1887 with funds provided by Stephen S. Smith, deacon of the Plymouth Congregational Church and publisher of the Pacific. In 1895, it became the Pierce Street Congregational Church. Large mansion at southwest corner of Pierce and Union was built circa 1884 by wealthy attorney and landowner David Bixler. Four story windmill and water tank across Union.
