Golden Gate ParkOcean Beach Pavilion viewed from Great Highway. Seal Rock Hotel at far left. Numerous horse drawn carriages and crowds of people on highway. Built in 1884, it contained a giant ballroom that could hold 2,000 people at a time. The building had bars, restaurants, and a boxing gym that was once used by the first African-American heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson. After many conversions and remodelings, the Pavilion was demolished in 1972.
Sutro HeightsAltenheim Building at MacArthur Blvd. and Excelsior Ave. in Oakland. 'Elders home' in German, retirement home to house retirees of Germanic descent. Built 1893-94. Burned down in 1908.
Outside SFBalloon ascension at Glen Park. View east across the valley toward San Miguel Hills. This is possibly the scene of an accident, the aerialist can be seen below the balloon attached to undeployed parachute. Light-colored structure at right is a model of Morro Castle, located at approximately today's Mizpah and Sussex Street.
Glen ParkGolden Gate Park. Built in 1896, the McLaren Lodge was once the home of John McLaren, the Park Superintendent from 1887 to 1943. Also held Offices for the Recreation and Parks Department, a use that continues today.
Golden Gate ParkSharon Building (also Sharon Lodge). Built in 1888, a sandstone building in the Richardsonian Romanesque style to serve as a canteen for children and mothers visiting the Golden Gate Park Children's Quarters. It was damaged the 1906 Earthquake and by fire in 1974, but it was restored to its original appearance after each of these disasters.
