View northeast across Kearny to crowded street scene. Merchant Street at center. Building with dark bunting on first story. Buildings on left, the former City Hall and Hall of Records, became the site of the Hall of Justice (built between 1896 and 1900). No streetcar wires or utility poles.

Crowd kneeling in gated yard and during outdoor Catholic church service at 2611 17th Street (then the southeast corner of 17th and York, later site of 17th St. car barn). Service was held on the Sunday following the earthquake and fire, led by Rev. Father Patrick Mulligan. Bernal Heights in the distance, building in distance at right may be Union Brewery at 18th and Florida Sts. The 1905 directory lists this as the home of attorney and former Sheriff John J. Mission
1906 Earthquake and Fire, View northwest across intersection to the Poodle Dog Restaurant in ruins (when later rebuilt, it was reduced to 3 floors from 5). In the 1980s it was torn down to become the Ramada Inn. Flood Building at right, Hotel Hamilton at left.
Tenderloin
1906 Earthquake and Fire, View west on Geary between Webster & Fillmore. People posed in the street with stoves and street kitchens, cable car tracks in the street. Ruins of Temple Beth Israel in the background. This is fairly soon after the earthquake, initially cooking was required as far as possible from buildings. Later street kitchens were allowed to move to the sidewalk. (JF) This area completely demolished in redevelopment.
