Elevated view south across Market between 4th and 5th Streets. The original 1855 St. Ignatius Church is in the background left. The newer structure on the right was completed in 1865. The photo must be 1866 because the extra two sets of stairs to the church were a later addition. The piles of railroad ties next to the Market Street Railroad (MSRR) track support the 1866 date because that was the year the San Francisco & San Jose RR (SF&SJRR) bought the MSRR, and began replacing the old narrow gauge single track with the wider gauge double track of the SF&SJRR to make their rolling stock compatible. (PF) Lawrence & Houseworth No. 327 'St. Ignatius Church and College, Market Street, San Francisco.' is a cropped version of this image. [St. Ignatius College 1865, S Side of Market St. between 4
