View northwest from near Market and 8th to City Hall Square (name changed to Marshall Square in December, 1902) and Pioneer (James Lick) Monument. Sign reads 'New City Hall Square.' French-made cannon in front of monument was a Spanish-American war prize, presented by the Army in a ceremony on March 21, 1900.( It is now in the Presidio.)
