Old Main Library and United Service Organization (USO) Hospitality House (constructed between March and August, 1941), a clubhouse for enlisted men. Other large structures in photo include, Empire Hotel (100 McAllister Building), Civic Auditorium, Orpheum Theater, Fox Theater, Merchandise Mart, Whitcomb Hotel, State Office Building (later Earl Warren Building).

Lincoln School

Elevated view southeast from near 5th and Market to Lincoln School, with Pietro Mazzero's Lincoln statue (dedicated April, 1866) in front. School designed by architect William Craine, construction began in August, 1864 and was completed in July, 1865. Taken before repairs to roof area as a result of major fire in February, 1871. Wooden plank sidewalks and street paving.
