Kearny near Maiden Lane
1906 Earthquake and Fire, Elevated view South on Kearny near Sutter toward Call Building in flames. Raphael's clothiers at Maiden Lane corner, M.A. Gunst opposite. Street clock reads 10:40. 700 Market Building, Mutual Savings Bank Building. At the time of this photo, Maiden Lane was called Union Square Alley. The name had been changed from Morton Street to Union Square Avenue in 1898, two years after the brothels had been cleared out, at the request of local businessmen to rid the alley of the associations of its former name, and to create a new association with the retail district around Union Square. It was renamed again in 1909, to Manila Alley, and again in 1922 to Maiden Lane.(PF) (hand colored) [Call Building on Fire]
