Van Ness near Bay
January 1, 1906
1906 Earthquake and Fire, 3000 block of Van Ness Avenue near Bay Street. Eggs being distributed to a crowd by US Navy Sailors. All of these buildings had to be demolished or moved to make way for the PPIE. The apartment building at far right was moved to 1515 Greenwich St, and still stands. At extreme left, barely visible, is a house that was moved to 1232-1234 Chestnut St; it also still stands.
Bill Kostura email: wkostura328@gmail.com message: This is the west side of the 3000 block of Van Ness Avenue (not 3600 block). All of these buildings had to be demolished or moved to make way for the PPIE. The apartment building at far right was moved to 1515 Greenwich St, and still stands. At extreme left, barely visible, is a house that was moved to 1232-1234 Chestnut; it also still stands. This would be a good subject for "A closer look" article.
