Golden Gate Park
View northwest across the Stadium and Polo Fields, crowds lined up along inner racetrack waiting for unknown event. A photographer setting up in the foreground. Golden Gate Park Stadium was proposed in 1904, delayed construction because of the 1906 earthquake and fire. Opened on July 4, 1906. It was envisioned as a multi-use stadium, but popularly called the Polo Field because that sport was played intermittently from the 1920s to 1960s.(JF)
