Layman's Castle on Telegraph Hill, also called the German Castle and Layman's Folly. Photos shows the building after it was enlarged in 1883. The tallest spire was a smokestack for a power plant in the basement that powered a short-lived funicular rail line running up the hill on Greenwich St. [Pioneer Park Observatory, Telegraph Hill. View southeast at the intersection of Sickles and San Jose Avenue, San Bruno Mountain in the background. Southern Pacific's Ocean View Station at center. Southern Pacific tracks coming from background left and crossing Market Street Railways Cemetery/Interurban streetcar line in the middle of the intersection. Tell House Saloon on Sickles to left of station. I280 Freeway mostly covers this site.
