Russian HillLooking northwest. Homes on Green Street at Jones, bottom of picture. The horse and wagon are at Union and Leavenworth. The flat structure top center is the Spring Valley Reservoir between Lombard and Greenwich and Hyde. To avoid confusion, the existing Octagon House is half a block west near Leavenworth. The octagon house showing at the bottom of the picture was replaced by another structure that survived 1906 and was torn down in 1950 to be replaced by a concrete apartment house.

Willard Burr, house at right to his son C.C. Burr. Burr's property was fenced along Laguna Survey lines, which were roughly diagonal to the main street grid. Rails on roadway for Sutter Street Railroad horsecar line to Harbor View, abandoned in 1873 in favor of a more direct route. Van Ness Avenue was extended through the property in 1894.
