South of MarketView southeast toward Pacific Telegraph and Telephone Building, 140 New Montgomery, under construction. Designed by Timothy Pflueger, it is one of SF's most iconic early skyscrapers. To the right is the San Francisco Furniture Exchange building, built 1920 and still standing on New Montgomery between Natoma and Howard. South of MarketExcavations undermined a wall of the Phillips & Van Orden Co. printing plant at 511 Howard, causing it to collapse and fill the excavation with debris and large rolls of paper intended for telephone directories.
