View west on Sutter toward Powell. Hotel Regent. Empty lots on northwest and southwest corners. Leah Dreyfus accident. A contemporary newspaper account described the fatal accident on January 26, 1912 as follows: "Mrs. Leah Dreyfus, a wealthy widow and mother of Emil and Walter Dreyfus of the contracting firm of Dreyfus Brothers, was almost instantly killed by a Sutter street car at the Powell street crossing at 12:30 this afternoon. Mrs. Dreyfus was about to cross at the corner and became confused by approaching cars. Before she could get out of the way she was knocked down, being thrown heavily to the pavement."
