Howard near 1st

Excavations undermined a wall of the Phillips & Van Orden Co. printing plant at 511 Howard, causing it to collapse and fill the excavation with debris and large rolls of paper intended for telephone directories. A worker, August Vallat, was trapped underneath a steam shovel for several hours, but was rescued with only slight injuries. [511 Howard St.dpwbook35 dpw9983]
