Golden Gate Park, view northwest across Bowling Green Drive near Middle Drive (now Nancy Pelosi) toward the entrance to the Deer Glen (now the AIDS Memorial Grove). From at least the 1910's to the 1990's this was known as the De Laveaga Dell, named after settler and philanthropist Jose Vicente de Laveaga. who gave a monetary bequest for its development in the 1890's. The building at left is Union Hall, on Howard between 3rd and 4th streets, built in 1863. California was filling up with easterners from northern states who fled west to escape the Civil War draft. Instead of fighting, they named a prominent building after the Union. In the 1880's Union Hall became Morosco's Amphitheatre. The building was destroyed by fire on May 2, 1898.
