The two story brick and stone facade with double archways at left is the remains of the Eureka Benevolent Society building (1900) at 436 O'Farrell. The Society was established in 1850 by August Helbing to assist immigrant Jews in San Francisco. It was rebuilt to a similar design in 1910 and that building still stands, with a fortune telling business occupying the first floor in 2019. [Looking Down O'Farrell St. from Jones]

The building was under construction at the time of the earthquake and fire. Construction had gotten only as far as partial completion of the walls for the first floor and completed later as the Cornelia Apartments, 641 O'Farrell, extant 2018.
