Lawrence and Houseworth No. 148, 'San Francisco, from cor. Market and Sixth Sts., Looking North to corner Stockton and California streets.' is same image with different cropping. Central Presbyterian Church

View northwest across Golden Gate Avenue (then Tyler) between Taylor and Jones. Built in 1873, then moved to Golden Gate and Polk and heavily remodeled in 1883. A description of this building is in the 1875 Langley Directory: 'The building is an octagon shape, surmounted by a dome from which suspends a sunburner [gas fixture], which is the only light used. The walls are handsomely frescoed and contain appropriate mottoes from the 'Beatitudes.' A splendid organ fills up the entire east wall. [G810 CHU-026] (GGNRA/Behrman GOGA 35346)

The three-story brick building at 300-304 O'Farrell Street, at the northwest corner of Mason, was built in 1865 as the groceries and liquors store of Robert Hampton. McCollam, a fish dealer who lived at #220; 218 Eddy, a flat-front Italianate built in 1868; 216 Eddy, a bay-windowed Italianate built in 1869 by Asa R. Wells, co-proprietor of the Mechanics' Mills at Mission and Fremont; the Second Advent Christian Church, built in 1873; and a triplex at 206-208 Eddy built in late 1875 as an investment by Cornelius Dorris, co-proprietor of the Russ House hotel. O'Connor plumber, two cars of the Sutter Street Railway's Larkin Street line. Geary Street, Park and Ocean Railway began operations in 1880 and was purchased by the Market Street Railway in 1887. Very similar to Carleton Watkins stereoview titled "Geary St., Park and Ocean Railroad Crossing Larkin St, R. R. Constructed by W. Eppelsheimer and operated under his patents."

A cornerstone-laying ceremony was held on May 14, 1884, and construction was completed in November, 1885. In this early view, R.J. Techau's Goodfellows Grotto in the basement appears to be just opening, with a stairway down from 7th Street and a "Family Entrance" accessed through the main entrance on Market. Corner retail space is still vacant. Castle Bakery (John Feyhl proprietor at far right, 1111 Market. Ennor Liquor Saloon on Market St. at lower right.
